How Long will a liner last?
The life of a liner (also called a chuck insert) depends on many factors and cannot be pre-determined for a particular application. We have had customers tighten over 1 million caps with a single liner, while other customers have worn a liner out before tightening 1000 caps.
In almost all cases, a liner will
tighten at least tens of thousands of caps before wearing out. If
the wear rate is quicker than this it is most likely because the torque
setting on the capping machine is set too high and is applying too
much torque for the particular bottle and cap combination; you are
over-tightening. Properly setting the torque on your capping machine
will ensure you receive the maximum life from your liner.
Another important factor that will influence the life of a liner is the physical nature of the cap. A smooth cap will wear a liner very slowly while a cap with deep serrations or other abrasive features will cause a liner to wear more quickly. When tightening caps with abrasive features, using one of our harder 70 or 80 durometer urethane liners, or our white rubber liner, will provide the long life you are looking for.
